Attempted Maternity Shoot

My sweet friend and her cute lil' girls were willing to let me practice on them. I had several ideas, most of which completely flew out of my mind as soon as we started. I had wanted to try a few techniques for custom white balancing but only actually tried one.... but it was a learning experience for sure. Between an amateur photographer and a self conscience subject, it's amazing we got anything at all! Now look at this pregnant chick and you tell me: she's beautiful, right?

Given the chance, I think I'd do some things differently. For instance, we had set up in one spot where I was thinking oh I love the light right here! These are going to be so pretty! But in actuality, once on my computer, the light was very harsh and only one was salvageable. And of course my goal isn't to salvage photos! Reading the light is for sure an area to work on. But as I said, learning experience.

Here's the link for all the pics if you just can't enough of my bland photography!

(This silhouette would be more effective without all the trees, but try to find an un-treed landscape in Upstate NY... go on- just TRY! (I have and failed!) As is, she was on a picnic table!

I know that these last three are super similar. I suffer from a case of I never know which one is the best-itis.

Thank you for looking. I must now go put an end to the kung fu princess drama going on in the other room. I give 'em marks for originality in make believe! (No marks for keeping the noise level down though...)
Love,

Absolutely beautiful! I too just purchased a DSLR camera with my hubby's blessing. Ours is a Nikon 5000. I love it & am having so much fun, I just wish I were more efficient with it's abilities. Are you taking classes or just learning by trial and error?

The photos you've posted thus far are fantastic!

Thanks Mendi... lots of trial and error, lots of reading online and browsing through photography books in the library/book stores. One that has often been recomended to me is Understanding Exposure by Bryan Peterson. My copy is awaiting me at the library; can't wait to read it!

Just finished browsing at 'Click it Up a Notch'... What a wealth of information! I think I need to spend a week or more just reading, experimenting and learning... Wow! She makes it seem so attainable! Thanks for sharing the blog address as well as the book title! I'll check it out! (I would humbly admit that I just want a five-easy-step plan to show me the way...) The idea of taking my camera off of "auto" mode scares me to death!?!?!? I'm excited to follow you and learn alongside you on this journey of photography!

I heaer you, Mendi! I wish it were just 123, instant great photographer. I guess it's one of those experience needed things. *sigh* I'm not patient!

By the time I got this camera, I had been studing SLRs and felt so limited by my point and shoot that I switched it to manual right out of the box and never bothered to learn the auto mode atall. But I've heard from several people that apperture priority mode can be a nice bridge between auto and manual. (I think for Nikkon's that is A mode. You'd have to check your camera manuel though). Anyway, have fun with it!
